Castel Thun, imposing and austere, was the seat of one the most important family of Trentino.
The castle stands on a hill dominating the town of Vigo di Ton, with a panoramic view over the whole of the Non Valley. It is a complex system of fortifications, made up of towers, walls, bastions, parapets and trenches, and owes its present appearance to modifications during the 16th Century. The Porta Spagnola, a massive gate, also dating from this century, leads via a drawbridge to the first courtyard. Facing it is the imposing baronial palace.
The spacious interior consists of a series of rooms in which the fine original furnishings and the family collection of paintings have survived. The most impressive and interesting room is the 16th Century Stanza del Vescovo (Bishop’s Chamber) that is panelled throughout in wood from the Stone Pine.
In 1992 Castel Thun was acquired by the Autonomous Province of Trento with is undertaking its restoration and it cataloguing the furnishing.
The 17 April 2010 the Castle will be opened to the public.

Imponente e austero, il castello fu la dimora di una delle più potenti famiglie feudali della regione.
Situato su una collina, in posizione panoramica rispetto all’intera Valle di Non, esso è circondato da un complesso sistema di fortificazioni costituito da torri, mura, bastioni, cammino di ronda e fossato e risalente al Cinquecento. Alla stessa epoca risale la potente Porta Spagnola, oltrepassata la quale si accede al ponte levatoio e al primo cortile.
Qui si eleva l’imponente Palazzo Baronale.
Nei vasti spazi interni si susseguono numerose sale, che conservano i ricchi arredi originari e un’interessante quadreria di famiglia.
L’ambiente più pregevole e interessante è la cinquecentesca Stanza del Vescovo, interamente rivestita di legno di cirmolo.
Castel Thun è stato acquisito nel 1992 dalla Provincia autonoma di Trento e dopo un attento e impegnativo intervento di restauro e studio è stato aperto al pubblico nel 2010.

Die Burg befindet sich in herrlicher Lage auf einem Hügel über Vigo di Ton und thront über dem gesamten Nonstal. Die ausgeklügelte Befestigungsanlage geht mit ihrem heutigen Ensemble aus Türmen, Schlossmauern, Basteien, Wehrgang und Graben auf Umbauarbeiten im Laufe des 16. Jh. zurück.
Aus der Zeit stammt auch das massive Spanische Tor, durch das man über die Zugbrücke in den ersten Burghof gelangt. Hier befindet sich der imposante Palazzo.
Macht spürt man auch im Inneren, wo sich mehrere, reich ausgestattete Säle befinden, die mit einer umfassenden Ahnengalerie geschmückt sind.
Der prächtigste unter den vielen Räumen ist das Bischofszimmer mit seiner herrlichen Zirbelholzverkleidung.
Im 1992 hat die autonome Provinz von Trient das Schloss gekauft und führt gerade Restaurierungsarbeiten und Studien durch.
Am 17. April 2010 wird das Schloss für das Publikum geöffnet werden.
