Build AM Radio Transmitter - SIMPLE Method How To

This is a follow on from Don at RestoreOldRadios. He built a simple AM transmitter and shared his design.

This is the end result. I decided to go old school and breadboard the design the way it would have been done in the 50's and 60's if you didn't want to go all circuit board or tag strips. I used simple copper covered nails with a slice of fake tree and built the entire unit.

There is only one part that you may have to buy in, I had enough spare parts to do it all but that is the nature of the hobby. If you use parts pulled from old electronics you can build it for zero cost. If you buy the parts then less than £5 will cover it.

Now myself and Doug, Mosslack, as well as Bob (you all know Bob) have been chatting via email about building this thing. We had a discussion about the inductor and I tried a couple of windings myself. I ended up using a standard centre tapped wind on an old core from the junk box and got a reasonable result.

If you like the idea of building this simple circuit then have a go. It is a good learning experience and if you do have any old radio sets then you can make them more useful by broadcasting your own music to them. If you are worried about the authorities, then unless you live somewhere under a strict regime, this transmitter will only have a very short range. It is easily under the FCC 100mW licence free spec, I measured an output of around 10mW from mine. This will give enough range to cover your own house but not much more than that. If you add an extra amplifier at the output.... that is at your risk.

A little about safety here.. This is NOT a dangerous project. The most harm you are likely to face is hitting your fingers with a hammer when making the board or burning yourself with the soldering iron. In fact, if you wrap your wiring tight enough, you don't need to even solder anything at all!
