Singapore Business Federation urges firms to consider retrenchment only as a last resort

The Singapore Business Federation (SBF) is asking over 27,000 of its member companies to practice responsible retrenchment methods. This comes as Singapore's unemployment rate rose to the highest level in more than a decade in the second quarter. Employers should first consider alternatives, such as sending employees for training to upgrade their skills, or implementing flexible work schedules. When retrenchments are inevitable, those affected should be selected objectively, based on the key skills and experiences needed to help the firm emerge stronger.
