More of Moxxi's 60s and 70s Commercial compilation all of the great toys from yesteryear!

Yesterday (Dec 28/16) my wife asked me what my favourite gift was that I ever received for Christmas. Having been married for 21 years, and graduating with a solid 2.0 GPA from "Husband University" I understand I should have said that it was something SHE gave me, but unfortunately I suddenly couldn't recall anything that stood out that I had ever received from her at Christmas. I know, that's terrible. The Marshall Fridge that she and my relatives went in on for my latest birthday stood out, but that was a birthday gift, not a Christmas gift.

Anyway, the answer was already a foregone conclusion as it was locked and loaded because I can't help but think of my favourite Christmas gift during the holidays. I received it back when I was about 7. We were having Christmas at my aunt's house (the one and only time that we went there for Christmas which was also partly memorable because she forgot to make gravy for the turkey which my father still complains about to this day). My brother and my three cousins were all in good spirits as our parents and grandparents were enjoying a festive time, listening to the latest Nestor Pistor Christmas record ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oGFPqctIDHE ) and eating Russian mints and whatnot. Then came present time.

As a child growing up in the 70s, I lived and breathed superheroes and thanks to ABC's Batman TV show, Batman and Robin were my favourites. So when I spied a Batman action figure in the line at Safeway one day, I almost literally passed out with excitement. It didn't take long to convince my mother to get me Robin too. I played with those Mego 8" action figures constantly.

But that Christmas (1973 or 1974) as I tore maniacally into a rectangular present I literally had no idea what could be inside. And then I saw him. Aquaman! It was an 8" Aquaman action figure! He was the guy from Super Friends who swam and talked to fish or whatever and to suggest Aquaman wasn't a blip on my super hero radar would be politely understating it. Yet, the bright pink box that shouted "World's Greatest Superheroes! at the top, sporting a collection of heroes faces where something didn't quite seem right (Batman, Robin, Superman, Aquaman, uh...is that Tarzan and what? Captain America? When did he join DC?) with the psycho-ultra--clashing of bright colours - orange, green, black and yellow - fused into my memory banks and the excitement that I experienced at that moment, holding a doll of a hero that I didn't even want, became my favourite Christmas gift ever. The only thing that could possibly top getting that Mego Aquaman action figure is if I actually got to unwrap another one sometime in the future. Please someone, anyone, make that happen for dear ol' Moxxi! :) Just kidding. Take that money and buy some toys or clothes for kids who need it. I'll survive.

From there my Mego love affair went out of control and I purchased and received many of them over the next few years. And I played the ever-loving-crap out of those figures. I don't even wish I had kept them in the box as they'd be all worth a small fortune. I played and played and played with them, fuelling my imagination with incredible stories and adventures the comics and cartoons couldn't come close to replicating. My second favourite Mego action figure was Falcon, "That Great Black Superhero!" 19:25 as they so eloquently mention in the Mego commercial. When I first got into playing DC Universe Online, I could have created any hero to be, but I chose to make Falcon my main toon. For those of you who have no idea what the last sentence means, don't worry about it.

Simultaneously as my Mego passion burned, so did the GI Joe adventures. I loved getting GI Joe's for birthdays and Christmas. Kung Fu grip, Eagle Eyed Joe etc. I even had Big Jim, Bullet Man, Mike Power Atomic Man and the $6 Million Dollar Man, Steve Austin - Bionic Man! I actually still have a few of them kicking around. A nice reminder of days gone by.

This commercial compilation I put together is all of those great Saturday morning ads that jump-started my love for all things action and superhero related. Taking us from the original hero doll, GI Joe through to Captain Action, Mego World's Greatest Superheroes and beyond to Kenner's Star Wars action figures. So please enjoy this latest batch.

And if you've read this far, I'd LOVE for you to share what your favourite gift was (Christmas or otherwise as not everyone celebrates Christmas) in the comments section below.
