Tudor Black Bay, Ranger, and Collection Review (London Jewelers)

Today Christian dives into several pieces from Tudor's current retail watch collection - all of which are showcased at London Jewelers' Oculus location in New York City. We look at the Black Bay Dark, Black Bay P01, the Heritage Chronograph, and Heritage Ranger individually, while discussing the where Tudor can improve on their line, in the Advisor and Black Bay Fifty-Eight, for example.

Today, Christian dives into the current Tudor collection, including members of the Black Bay and Heritage lines.

The first is the Black Bay Dark. On its face, the watch is a standard Black Bay, with its 41mm steel case, unidirectional diving bezel, and so on. Its only differences are aesthetic ones, and all related to the PVD black coating on the case and bracelet. On a bracelet, it drowns the watch in a kind of uniform, ultimately boring look. However, we got the chance to throw it on a navy blue Tudor fabric strap and BOY does it transform the look of the watch.

Now, let's take a look at the Heritage Ranger. It's a watch that has been in the brand's line for years, and is one that is incredible in principle. However, the dial's simple design and layout begs for a case smaller than 40mm (ideally closer to the original vintage model's 36mm).

One of the brand's fan-favorite models is the Heritage Chronograph, a watch that feels in many ways like the lovechild of the Rolex Daytona and the Heuer Monaco. It is based on the vintage Tudor Monte Carlo, a watch that looks nearly identical to the modern Heritage Chrono. If there was one gripe we could possibly have here, it's the size. As it is, it is a worthy addition to the line, but perhaps offering a smaller variant, much like the Black Bay Fifty-Eight is to the standard Black Bay.

Finally, we have the Black Bay P01. It's a controversial release from the brand, one that spent the beginning of its promotional campaign being incorrectly theorized as, in fact, a new Tudor Submariner. However, the P-01 is in fact based on a Tudor concept for the US Navy from decades ago called "The Commando," which never did make it into full production. The main feature of the watch, its main novelty, is the bezel system, which involves a metal endlink to the strap locking down the bezel from being rotated. It's a truly fascinating bit of engineering that, though not aesthetically pleasing, is truly ingenious.
