Black Mesa: Blue Shift - 04 - Captive Freight

Chapter 4: Captive Freight

Barney emerges onto the surface of Black Mesa just in time to witness the arrival of the HECU, marines deployed to the facility to contain the alien invasion. However, he soon finds out that this entails the elimination of all personnel as well. Amidst combat with the enemy soldiers, he runs into fellow staff members that tell him of a man named Rosenberg, who may have the only means for them all to escape. With no other choice, Barney sets out into the freight yards of Black Mesa on a harrowing journey to rescue the doctor.

Notes:
- Most of the new weapons acquired in this chapter (i.e. the Magnum and MP5) have more than one reload animation
- All of the personnel rescued from the containers aside from Rosenberg now form part of the posse that Barney builds up over the course of the chapter, as opposed to simply being disposable scientists as they were in the original game
- The HECU in this chapter are capable of jumping on and off elevated platforms, much like the Alien Grunts in the base game
- If Barney opens fire on the HECU first starting at 00:31, they will exclaim “SHIT, he knows!”
- There is no way to stealth past the Houndeyes at 10:05
- Touching the hot water pipes in the room at 18:14 will injure Barney
- The security guard with the helmet (Murdoch) at 33:55 is the same one that Barney encountered in Chapter 3 (Duty Calls); this was retconned after Chapter 4 was uploaded, as the guard prior to this update had different facial hair
- Having Otis and Murdoch follow Barney through the tripwire at 37:05 will immediately trip it, which is why I told them to hold back
- Passing the bottom of the stairs at 39:48 will aggro all the HECU in the area regardless of whether or not Barney is still trying to stealth, which is why I shot first
- The remains of the sniper killed at 42:46 can be seen at 1:43:20
- There is no stealth option at the encounter at 49:23
- In addition to the controls given for the train at 52:30, Barney can also sound the horn by pressing “D”, and turn on/off the headlights by right-clicking
- Otis and Ellie do eventually get Murdoch to open up the gate at 1:01:20. If Barney goes to the other side of the garage (i.e. out of sight of the NPCs) Murdoch can be heard opening the shutter and letting them in. For some reason this didn’t play in my playthrough, so I opted to add the dialogue back in at 1:03:11
- The power lines above the trains at 1:04:49 WILL shock and damage Barney if he touches them
- Throwing a grenade at the gunner at 1:09:55 will usually get him off the .50cal
- Once Barney clears out the .50cal nest at 1:10:40, a second wave of HECU usually begins to assault his position from where he came from; for some reason this did not happen during my playthrough
- The Abrams in the boss fight at 1:36:26 will only start using its machine gun after 5 rocket hits on Hard

Trivia:
- It seems that Captive Freight takes place between the events of Office Complex and We’ve Got Hostiles in Black Mesa, as the sun sets right at the end and the HECU have started their aerial bombardment
- The aircraft at 00:26 are the CH-47 Chinooks, which are not encountered in the base game
- The freight yard offices and train depot (Maps 5 & 6) can be seen in the distance if looking past the fence at 2:02 and again at 6:25. Vice versa, Map 1 can be seen from the freight yard at 40:41
- The marines at 7:09 close the door that would’ve allowed Barney to head right to the Freight Yard
- The pipe room at 18:14 can be glimpsed through the wall at 14:58, and vice versa at 18:37
- At 24:53, the marines mention Goose 7 as one of the Ospreys that did not make their LZ. Goose 7 is the one Adrian Shepard was on prior to being attacked by Mantas
- Noclipping up to the platform at 27:48 will reveal a pizza covered with donuts, alongside the graffiti “The donut guru was here!”. A similar easter egg can be found in Chapter 3
- If Barney chooses not to investigate the broken wall at 35:11, the resultant dialogue that the posse will have at 1:44:10 will be different
- The corpse at 45:31 with his arms behind his back is a reference to Family Guy, specifically Peter’s “death pose”
- The container being moved at 47:36 is the one containing Rosenberg
- The scientist that was killed by a sniper at 48:33 can be seen on the ground at 1:03:20
- Additional Trivia can be found in the comments (ran out of characters in description)
