The Whole Herd Enjoy a Dam Swim on a Beautiful Hot Day in the Bush

A refreshing new day at the waterhole for the whole herd! Khanyisa turns two today and is enjoying a day out with her elephant family, as always! On this recent swim captured this week, our Jabulani guests watched the herd from a distance with Head Ranger Jason and Elephant Carer Shepherd in the vehicle.

Khanyisa, Timisa, Pisa and Lundi go straight for the water, with big bull, Fishan behind them. Sebakwe leads a new group down to the dam and gives Fishan a nudge to move forward. Sebakwe prefers to wait for space to clear up in the dam before heading in to swim. Mambo and Zindoga, the two young bulls, head down the slope toward the water too. Mambo causes some mischief later as she challenges Setombe. Setombe often used to discipline Mambo when he was younger and Mambo seems to be trying to step up and claim dominance over her now that he is older and growing stronger. He often chases after Setombe to spar, with Setombe holding her own. Here she eventually retreats and goes off to the side to bathe in the sand with the dedicated elephant carers close by. Setombe is a good discipliner but prefers to avoid drama and trouble, as she is a nervous elephant. This is why she likes to be close to Sebakwe, as the dominant bulls offers her support and protection.

Khanyisa is followed by wonderful allomother Kumbura and young elephant Timisa as she heads away from the dam and into the bushes to feed. The herd pick up wild elephant scents and respond by gathering close together and trumpeting. Jabulani is a little slow at coming to join the herd and ambles nonchalantly up to them.

The elephants slowly exit the dam and enjoy a sand bath on the banks. As the sand is not too loose in this area, some of the elephants take to lying down to get maximum exposure to the sand on their big bodies. The sand provides protection from the sun and biting insects out in the wilderness.

Khanyisa later joins up with Pisa, while Klaserie and Limpopo roll around on the ground, with Sebakwe, Timisa and Tokwe close to them. Some of the elephants appear ready to head off, but they wait patiently for the others to finish their sand shower and join them. The elephants visit the dams in the reserve every day and choose whether to drink or enjoy a full on swim. When they're ready, our carers join them to head off to new foraging areas.
