SFHS Presents Bernard Zakheim's Murals at UCSF Toland Hall, San Francisco

The SFHS October Program features Polish-born artist Bernard Zakheim, whose murals have graced the walls of UCSF's Toland Hall since the 1930s. The murals depict the history of medicine in California, from Native Americans bringing healing herbs to Father Junipero Serra to the first autopsy conducted in North America.

Local historian Lorri Ungaretti tells the story of how these murals came to be: who commissioned them; the controversy they once caused due to their candid portrayal of medical procedures; and, finally, their uncertain fate as the building that holds these treasures is slated for demolition.

The story of the Zakheim murals evokes an ongoing narrative that is increasingly visible, everywhere we look. We are honored to offer this presentation and hope that it inspires both critical thinking and bold imagination for history lovers everywhere.
