In July 2008, 91-year-old Charles William Haywood left Owensboro Medical Health System in Owensboro, Kentucky, and vanished. His black 2002 Ford Ranger disappeared with him. Law enforcement searched. The family waited. For nearly 18 years, there was nothing.

During a sonar search of the Green River near the Spottsville Boat Ramp in Henderson County, Kentucky, I located a submerged vehicle matching Charles Haywood's target profile. I recovered the license plate. Registration confirmed: 500 DZM. Charles William Haywood's 2002 Ford Ranger — missing for nearly two decades.
I contacted Owensboro-Daviess County Dispatch at 11:47 a.m. The Owensboro Police Department, Henderson County Sheriff's Office, and Ohio Township Fire Department Dive Team responded. The truck was recovered that afternoon.
The following morning, investigators searched the vehicle and located skeletal remains, a wallet, and identification believed to belong to Charles Haywood. Final identification was pending confirmation through the Kentucky Medical Examiner's Office.
His family was present during the recovery. After 18 years, they finally had answers.
