Mass demonstrations were held in the country of Belize Wednesday June 20, 2008, against the exploitation policies of the British multinational and billionaire Michael Ashcroft.

Ashcroft, who controls some of Belize’s major national industries like telecommunications, banking, media, hotel, port facilities and the nations two major political parties has been facing serious and radical opposition since the coming to power of the United Democratic Party (UDP) government in February of this year.

Belizeans across the nation has voiced widespread discontent over a $40, million Belizean dollar grant from the Venezuelan government which was to be used for poverty alleviation and housing for Belize’s poor. But the previous government of Said Musa diverted the grant money to payoff loans owed to an Ashcroft company, Belize Bank, without consulting the Belizean people.

Belize’s new Prime Minister, Dean Barrow inherited the bankrupted government institutions and has filed corruption charges against his predecessors for spending monies that was for the nation’s people. Prime Minister Barrow has demanded that the Ashcroft owned bank return the $40, million dollars paid to it last year.

The Belize Trade Unions, Teachers Unions, the Kremandala Media and concerned Belizeans across the country marched on the Belize Bank in Belize City on Wednesday and again today demanding the return of the monies to the Belizean treasury.
