Shabbat table set in Bondi to represent the 200 hostages taken by Hamas is a symbol of “resilience and hope”, says Executive Council of Australian Jewry Co-CEO Alex Ryvchin.

The Jewish community set up an empty Shabbat dinner table on Friday in Bondi to represent the hostages taken by the Palestinian militant group.

“The community came together spontaneously this morning knowing that the Sabbath was almost upon us,” he told Sky News host Erin Molan.

“It’s a time when Jewish families throughout the world get together and we rest and we talk and we deepen our connection to our people and to our faith and to humanity.

“But we knew that this time something was incomplete, something was missing, and we couldn’t have the joy and rest that we normally do, knowing that more than 200 of our people are held right now in captivity by those absolute barbarians.”
