It was an oversized, overweight, cardboard box
Large enough to hold an ox
Left by my gate with a note addressed to me
That said “Merry Christmas” “I’m so sorry”

Did my sweety send it trying to make up?
Did he finally regret our little break up?
It was then I read the other side of the note
And was taken aback at the words he wrote

Christmas isn’t hiding in a treasure chest
It isn’t measured by items possessed
Christmas might be packed in a Cardboard box
With taped-up seams – no bows, no strings,
no locks

Just an ill-fated, corrugated box of brown
My cat jumped on it and hunkered down
Did I hear scratching? must be my cat
Since corrugated cardboard was better than a rat

I gave the box a kick and I stubbed my toe
I hopped on one foot and yelled “oh!”
Did I just hear the box also yell “oh!”?
Or had my hearing turned stereo?

I was time to open up this box of dreams
But I couldn’t get through its taped-up seams
So I went and got a knife from the garage
Dancing the whole way, like a girl in a play
Like a girl with her first corsage

I thought of my baby, sad and alone
So I dialed him up on my cellphone
Then I plunged my knife into the cardboard box
Too small for a car, too big for socks

Then came one of life’s greatest shocks
I heard ringing from inside the box
I heard “Merry Christmas,” in a groan, from myphone, and the box below
I dropped my knife, I could only say “uh oh,”
“oh no,” “Hello?”
