Microsoft Didn't Buy Stargate for the Compute. | Dispatch 003

Microsoft bought 1.2 gigawatts of grid queue position at Stargate Abilene — the years already spent waiting for power. The building came with it.

12 gigawatts of US data center capacity were planned for 2026. Four are under construction. The binding constraint is electrical gear (things like: transformers, batteries, circuit breakers, switching gear) that makes up less than 10% of a project’s cost, but is the only thing that decides whether a campus comes online.

Three timelines run in parallel on every project, and the longest one wins. The interconnection queue: four and a half years, US median, for projects completing in 2024. (Seven years in Northern Virginia; nine-plus in California.) Transformer procurement: 128-week lead time as of Q2 2025, demand up 274% since 2019, Wood Mackenzie projecting a 30% supply gap. Substation permitting: seven to ten years. That last number is Microsoft’s own framing, from January 2026. Transmission permitting takes the time it takes.

The chip supply story loosens by 2028. The grid story reverts in seven years, if everything goes right. The interconnection queue can’t be reformed to fit a five-year financing window.

Crusoe built its own power plant at Abilene. Google paid $4.75 billion for Intersect Power. Both looked at the interconnection queue and decided to generate their own.

DRAM was the chokepoint nobody watched in 2025. Grid capacity is the one they’re not watching in 2026. The headline gets quoted on the earnings call. The footnote gets filed at the utility commission. Both are public, and only one is being read.
