Dakgalbi
Dakgalbi is a really fun meal- it’s social and it’s TASTY. We visit Ogeunnae Dakgalbi which was in the Bib Gourmand Michelin Guide 2017. The meal is essentially spicy marinated chicken cooked in a huge pan on the table together with cabbage, rice cakes and other vegetables. The dakgalbi is wrapped up in lettuce and perilla leaves before eating as ssam (a wrap). The meal is served with side dishes (banchan) and you can opt to have rice added to the remaining sauce and chicken towards the end of your meal to create fried rice. We eat at Ogeunnae Dakgalbi, 15 Ichon-ro 29-gil, Hangangno 3(sam)-ga, Yongsan-gu, Seoul. Open daily midday to 10:00pm.

Samgyetang
A popular dish in summer, ginseng chicken is a small chicken stuffed with glutinous rice, red dates, ginseng in a milky broth. We eat at Tosokchon, 5 Jahamun-ro 5-gil, Sajik-dong, Jongno-gu, 서울특별시 South Korea. Open 10:00am to 10:00pm daily.

Sundubu Jiigae
This soft tofu stew features fresh curds of tofu simmering in a fiery, warming broth. Served with rice and banchan this is one meal you don’t want to miss! We ate at Jaedong Soondubu, Jaedong 84-11, Jogno-gu, Seoul. Closest metro station: Anguk. Open 11:30am to 10:00pm. Closed Sunday.

Chimaek
Chicken and beer is a huge crowd favourite in Korea. Our favourite eateries are the small, local joints which serve beer, soju and fried chicken. Tubs of radish and spicy sauce are available if you want to trick your meal up. The birds are usually smaller at these joints and much cheaper than the more modern chimaek restaurants. The chickens are simply deep fried as is or coated in a light batter before frying and served with a salt and pepper mixture. Addictive and SO GOOD. Korean BBQ
Another very social and fun way to dine is Korean BBQ. Most restaurants offer beef and pork with a wide range of side dishes and lettuce and perilla leaf wraps. We ate at Seogyo store in Hongjik University, Smoky-dong 331-18 Mapo-gu, Seoul. Open daily in the evenings.
