BJP Criticises Tamil Nadu Minister’s Call for Increased Muslim Reservation

BJP State unit president Nainar Nagenthran on Monday (June 15, 2026) strongly objected to Tamil Nadu Minister for Minorities Welfare A.M. Shahjahan’s (IUML) statement regarding a demand to increase the reservation for Muslims, from the existing 3.5% to 5%, within the Backward Classes quota. Mr. Nagenthran further urged the TVK-led coalition government to drop such a proposal.

“While some Hindus from the Backward Classes have already lost their representation due to the existing 3.5% reservation for Muslims in Tamil Nadu, additional reservation for Muslims would further reduce the representation of Hindus from Backward Classes,” Mr. Nagenthran contended.

The debate comes amid broader national discussions on reservation policies. BJP leaders have recently alleged that some opposition-ruled states, including Tamil Nadu, are extending OBC reservation benefits to large sections of Muslim communities, while demanding a review of such policies. According to figures cited in Parliament, about 95% of Muslim communities in Tamil Nadu are covered under the OBC list, with a separate 3.5% quota for backward Muslims within the state's reservation structure. Opposition parties, however, maintain that these benefits are granted on backward-class criteria and not purely on religious grounds. As the political temperature rises, the reservation issue is once again at the center of India's electoral and social justice debate.
