What is that screw thingy? #shorts

There are two main thread sizes are common on photo & video gear (and audio gear too). We often talk about them as common knowledge but if you are just starting out it can sound like gearhead jargon. 1/4" (or 1/4-20) threads are commonly used for smaller gear where there isn't too much weight, where as the 3/8" thread is usually for heavier duty or larger equipment. Although this isn't universal, it is a good rule of thumb when simply looking at something and guessing its size.
