Being a different person in the Arab community means that you always have to hide! This is how it has been for me for the past sixteen years, as my illness –muscular dystrophy- has been transforming me every day into a more different person and a less beautiful woman.
However, from my personal experience, and my volunteer work with people with disabilities, today more than ever, I believe that we must embrace our flaws, stop hiding, and show the world who we really are. And it is the duty of every one of us to promote a culture of acceptance where everyone is included. I am Batool, 26 years old, MA student in Web Science. I work as a software engineer, a content writer, and a performer of voiceover.
I have been suffering from muscular dystrophy for about 16 years now, and I have almost lost the ability to move.
Three years ago, I established the Light Initiative, a voluntary work to support the blind and visually impaired. That is how I am trying to help empower people with disabilities in my own way.
