Senator Steve Daines: "“fine with the 80,000 acres” but still won't support BCSA

On July 21, 2022, U.S. Senator Steve Daines voted against the Blackfoot Clearwater Stewardship Act. But during the U.S. Senate Energy & Natural Resource Committee meeting in an exchange with Senator Angus King, Senator Daines admitted he's "fine with the 80,000 acres" proposed for protection through BCSA.

The bill, championed by Senator Jon Tester, has the support of 83 percent of Montanans, according to the 2022 University of Montana Voter Survey on Public Lands. The legislation is the culmination of a years-long collaborative effort involving people up and down the Blackfoot and Clearwater valleys who represent a broad spectrum of interests – conservation, timber, ranching, outfitting, local business and conservation.

Senator Daines, who sits on the U.S. Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, voted against advancing the bill and is instead pushing his own legislation to strip 100,000 acres of wilderness study areas of their protections.
