Norfolk Southern Flange Greaser, Fast Mixed Freight At The Skirmish, Walton Kentucky Trains

Fast Norfolk Southern mixed freight passes flange greaser on the NS main line at Walton , Kentucky. Site of a huge battle back in 1862. This is south of the huge railroad construction job with the railroad crossing closure and shoofly that I filmed recently. During the civil war, 500 soldiers attacked a federal camp here. The hydraulic flange greaser activates when a wheel rolls over the actuator. Grease helps prevent wear to the wheel flanges and rails and also reduces noise. The grease can be carried up to a few miles down the track and helps fight friction that is caused by curves in the track. You can barely see the actuator button/plunger at 00:45. The wheels push the button and a certain amount of grease is pumped at preset intervals. It is such a small amount that there is no way that my camera would be able to show it. This grease is some nasty stuff and railroaders hate it because it gets flung around by the trains wheels and is very difficult to remove when you try to wash it off. It also reduces traction for the locomotives. It is so greasy along the rails that you can't see where the holes are that if pumps out of. Some countries use oil that is pumped from the locomotive onto the rails. Cass Scenic Railroad uses water as lubrication. The train in this video is a southbound NS manifest that came out of Queensgate Yard in Cincinnati, Ohio and is headed toward Chattanooga, Tennessee. This line is the CNO&TP and is owned by the city of Cincinnati. Trains operate on 160.950 calling out the lineside signals. I filmed this on November 5, 2020. Thanks for watching!
