Blackmagic Design DaVinci Resolve Speed Editor Jog Wheel Loose Bearings Problem and how to fix it.
Replacing the bearings in the Backmagic Design Jog Wheel magnetic encoder. Probably the encoder is a hall effect sensor.

I noticed the jog wheel on the speed editor keyboard controller for DaVinci Resolve Studio video editor was getting a bit loose and shaking slightly sideways.
I was hoping it’d only the wheel attachment mount to the magnetic encoder shaft and I removed the jog wheel from the encoder but it looks like it’s the actual shaft of the magnetic encoder that moves.

I had to do a teardown of the speed editor focused on tearing the Blackmagic Design jog wheel magnetic encoder sensor apart.

I did open the speed editor eventually and was pleasantly surprised by how easy the magnetic encoder shaft can be removed and how the bearings of the speed editor are standard steel bearings.

When I opened it in the teardown videos, I saw the markings on the bearings but didn’t know they are actually markings of the precise size of the bearings making it super easy to search and find replacement bearings for the speed editor jog wheel.
The markings are 686RS 2 pieces and they are the same size.
It’s not clear what type of precision they are but after searching a bit.
I ordered 2 types of replacements for the bearings in the jog wheel.
1 set is

686RS or 6862RS and precision standard ABEC 7
then I realized there are more precise ones same size 686RS but ABEC 9.

After removing the bearings I cleaned them and oiled them with a bit of mineral oil even though it’s not recommended, it’s what I had.

After cleaning the jog wheel feels smoother but it still has the sideways play. That should be fixed when the replacement bearings are done.

I replace the bearings in the speed editor magnetic encoder for the jog wheel.
But there is still some play left in the Jog wheel and I realized the plastic joi song where the magnetic encoder sensor shadow and bearings are installed has some wear marks and you can see the bearing outside moves inside the housing.
Eventually I decided to use some simple electrical take as bushings for the bearings and it worked perfectly.
The speed editor wheel is like new now!!

Probably I didn’t have to replace the bearings at all but I did notice that the play was less after using the ABEC 9 bearings.

If your speed editor wheel feels loose try the tape trick but I believe it’s better to replace the bearings too since you’re opening it anyway.
