The Story of Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable
The Field Museum and DuSable Museum of African American History discuss the life and legacy of Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable, the first permanent non-Indigenous settler in Illinois. Bridgette Russell, the Field Museum’s PR Director, moderates a conversation with: Andrea Carlson (Ojibwe), visual artist; Kim L. Dulaney, Ph.D., Director of Education and Programs at DuSable Museum; Courtney Pierre Joseph, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of History and African American Studies at Lake Forest College.
They explore DuSable’s journey from Haiti to the Great Plains and his relationships with Native American communities, which helped him become Chicago’s first non-Native settler.
