Omang? - Digkopa (Female coming-of-age)

There is a Pedi coming of age ritual in Limpopo where girls, upon getting their first signs of menstruation, have their heads shaven in a mohawk manner, and red clay is applied to the remaining part of their hair. They are secluded and spend up to six weeks with elderly women who will inform them in all forms of joys and pains of being a woman in order to welcome them into womanhood. Their 'release' from this ritual is a cause for celebration and a great party for family, who are happy and proud to have a 'woman' in their abode.
