As Plainly We May See, (Echo) DAVIS, Daniel Paul. Music for Choir.

As Plainly We May See is an SATB setting of the original two-voice canon ECHO. The actual music was first composed as incidental music to a 2003 theatrical production of "The Crucible" at the Albuquerque Little Theater and was immediately adapted with these words to Standard and Shape Note notation. Echo first appeared in High Desert Harmony #53b in 2004. It was then included in the Albuquerque Mennonite special collection of sacred songs On The Way #453 (2012). It has also been arranged for Viola and Bassoon. While living briefly in Seattle in 2018 I reworked the canon into a choral anthem (SATB) and was given the opportunity to teach it to the Seattle Mennonite Church Choir. The striking words were included in American Hymns Old and New and were identified as Anonymous Mennonite, 1877. To date, I have not met a single Mennonite person who knows these words. In a brief conversation with one of the text editors for the new Mennonite hymnal Voices Together publ. 2020. The best he could determine is that it was more than likely, not Mennonite, but possibly a text by an anonymous Brethren poet and written earlier than 1877. The quest for the poetic source continues!
