Gluck: The Origin of Queer Art

Homosexuality was heavily frowned upon in the UK at the beginning of the 20th century. For men, it was illegal and, for women, it was invisible. Queer artist Gluck (1895-1978) became a notable artist of this period despite wearing male clothes and having female loves, while being considered a woman by their contemporaries. The painting analyzed in this video essay, Medallion (YouWe) (1936), is one of their most famous as it is one of the first depiction of a queer relationship in art history.
