CBS Evening News Old & New Theme 2016

As many would already know, the Trivers/Myers theme originally commissioned in 1987 has long stood the test of time on CBS, spanning an impressive 29 years as the sound of the Evening News. Even when it was dumped in favour of an entirely new package composed by Oscar winning composer James Horner in the 2006 'Katie Couric' relaunch, it made a remarkable return when Scott Pelley took over as anchor of the broadcast in 2011.
Incredibly, the theme that returned in 2011 was not a newly composed take on the '87 theme, but WAS the original 1987 recording of the CBS Evening News theme, only slightly remastered. Granted they had started using a new headline cue(which was actually a remixed version of the last part of the long credit closer from the original package), the sound engineers had done a remarkable job likening the signature to that very first orchestral theme ever used by CBS while still making it sound clean, new and urgent.

The original 1987 theme music was recorded at the Fox sound stage and took six hours to perform.

The CBS Evening News theme for 2016 debuted on May 31, 2016 at 6:30pm eastern time. It was originally composed by Joel Beckerman for CBS' 2016 election coverage and has transitioned across to the Evening News. Accompanied by a refreshed opener, bumpers and titles, the new sound is hoped to become the signature of the CBS news brand for many years to come.

What's your thought on the new theme? Will it stretch the decades the Trivers/Myers theme has or will it be replaced after the 2016 US presidential election coverage ends?
