Adobe After Effects CC 2025: How To Follow Motion Path + Auto-Orient

This tutorial will show you how to make an object follow along a Motion Path and Auto-Orient its rotation to look more natural when changing directions on the Path in Adobe After Effects CC 2025.

How To Draw a Custom Path
1. Grab the Pen Tool (g)
2. Tick the ‘RotoBezier’ checkbox
3. Choose Stroke Color
4. No Fill Color
5. Click to create a Point
6. Click again and drag to get bezier handles to make nice curves
7. Repeat the click and drag

How To Animate Shape Layer on Path (Copy Path)
1. Add Graphic or Create A Shape (Star, etc)
2. In After Effects timeline, click on ‘Shape Layer’
3. Twirl Open Path Layer
4. Select Path Property
5. Copy (Cmd/Ctrl + C)
6. Twirl Open Shape Layer
7. Type ‘P’ keyboard shortcut for Position Property
8. Click on ‘Position’
9. Paste (Cmd/Ctrl + V)

How To Auto-Orient Objects On A Path:
1. Select the object in the Layers Panel
2. Go to the Layers Menu at the top
3. Select Transform
4. Select ‘Auto-Orient’
5. Tick ‘Orient Along Path’
6. Click OK
7. Object will now orient in the direction of the path
