Mamata Banerjee vs Tata The Singur Story

In 1998, Mamata Banerjee broke away from the Indian National Congress and founded the All India Trinamool Congress. It was the beginning of one of the biggest political shifts in West Bengal.

Then came 2006 and the controversial Singur land acquisition battle. Nearly a thousand acres of farmland were acquired for a Tata Motors factory project. Many farmers opposed the move, and Mamata Banerjee launched a massive protest that captured national attention.

She sat on a hunger strike for 26 days, turning Singur into the center of India’s political debate around land rights, industrialization, and farmer protests. Eventually, Tata Motors withdrew the project from Bengal, a moment that reshaped the state’s political future and accelerated the rise of Trinamool Congress.

This is the story of one protest that changed Bengal politics forever.
