China Thinks This Weightlifter Is Theirs... But Kazakhstan Disagrees

Zulfiya Chinshanlo (KAZ -55) is the Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist, a three-time world champion ('09, '11, '14), and was popped retroactively having initially won the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Interestingly, China claims Zulfiya Chinshanlo as their own, saying that she was born in the Chinese province of Hunan, that she was 'leant' to Kazakhstan on a five year lease contract that ended in 2012 and that she ought to have then returned to join the Chinese national squad. Both the Kazakh sports authorities and Zulfiya Chinshanlo disagree, claiming that she was born in Kazakhstan and has no relationship with China.

Years later and both countries continue to disagree.

This dispute falls as the backdrop to what will be an exciting battle between Zulfiya Chinshanlo and the two Chinese -55kg weightlifter from China Yu Linglong and Long Xue.
