SpaceX HUMILIATED NASA With Their High Tech SPACE SUITS

Long-time space enthusiasts will notice one difference in the spiffy spacesuits that Crew-1
astronauts Bob Behnken and Doug Hurley will wear: they are not the orange "pumpkin" flight
suits astronauts used to wear during the launch phase of NASA-managed shuttle flights. Instead
of the old-school "pumpkin suit" launch suits Behnken and Hurley wore multiple times for space
shuttle missions, this time the veteran astronauts were decked in all-white SpaceX suits for their
rocket ride to orbit.
NASA astronauts Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken were the first humans to wear these suits in
space during their mission. Both of the NASA astronauts dressed in SpaceX spacesuits, walk
through the Crew Access Arm connecting the launch tower to the SpaceX Crew Dragon
spacecraft on Jan. 17, 2020, at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
The futuristic flight suits worn by Doug Hurley and Bob Behnken during Saturday's successful
launch appear to be a far cry from the bulky orange shuttle flight suits worn by astronauts when
they last launched from Florida's Kennedy Space Center.
The helmets and gloves are 3D-printed, and the gloves are touchscreen-enabled. However, their
primary function remains the same: to protect crew members from depressurization, which
occurs when air is lost from the capsule. The suits also ensure that astronauts have enough
oxygen and regulate their body temperature. A single "umbilical" cable in the seat that plugs into
the suit provides a communications link as well as breathable air.
Don't count on SpaceX's suit for spacewalks, however. For the foreseeable future, astronauts will
continue to use the shuttle-era Extravehicular Mobility Unit (EMU), which is designed to work
for 8-10 hours or so for microgravity activities in a full vacuum, while providing protection
against radiation.

Subsequently, two of these SpaceX spacesuits proved their worth in space, before being used by
humans. One flew with the Tesla-driving dummy that launched on a Falcon Heavy rocket in
2018, and another was used on the dummy Ripley that flew aboard the un-crewed SpaceX Crew
Dragon Demo-1 test flight to the ISS in 2019.

"I bet we've donned and offed those suits a couple hundred times," Hurley said during a press
conference from the space station on June 1. The SpaceX spacesuits were custom-made for the
astronauts and were thus extensively used during Demo-2 mission training.
