See, I’ve been approaching this wrong. I’ve been paying attention to Tesla’s vehicle production. BUT, the greatest threat to Tesla isn’t another EV manufacturer, it’s actually another autonomy producer. Well, enter what are called: Off the Shelf Autonomy systems. In March 2017 the Israeli company Mobile Eye was acquired by Intel. MobileEye was actually used in 2015 and 2016 with Tesla for Tesla’s autopilot’s systems in Tesla autopilot hardware 1.0. And in 2016, a Tesla crashed into a semi truck while on autopilot and the car drove under the semi truck - ripping off the top half. The driver was rumored to have been watching Harry Potter. Tesla separated itself from mobile eye. Tesla has focused on building out it’s own autopilot system, which it uses now. However, mobile eye hasn’t gone away. Anything put, it’s gotten better, and stronger. In fact here’s a video of mobile eye, which I’ve sped up, on full autopilot driving through Israel. Now this was apparently only possible in Israel, because perhaps this is premapped - after all this was an Israeli company, but this video is from may 2020 and shows you how incredible the technology has gotten. This technology is incredibly powerful and gives Tesla a run for its money. But wait, mobile eye isn’t a car company. and bingo - that’s the dangerous part. If Tesla’s future value is its revenues times its automation, as Elon puts it AND as I’ve analyzed in my many videos on Tesla, then it’s not an EV manufacturer that we have to be worried about, it’s MobileEye. Mobile Eye is an off the shelf Advanced Driver Assistance System and features autonomous driving, as we see here. And because mobile eye isn’t a car company, it partners with over 25 auto makers manufacturing over 300 car models using mobil eye technology. It’s literally like: here bmw you punted getting into autopilot? No problem just license mobile eye and call it whatever you want. The BMW series 3 and X5 branded under BMW Driving Assistance Professional. The VW passant and golf branded under VW Travel Assist The 2021 Ford Mustang and F150 Nissan’s ProPilot 2.0 And Nio’s Pilot, ES8 and ES6. The more cars use MobileEye, the more data mobile eye gets, the better its maps get, and the stronger of a competitor it is. The same is true for Tesla. But folks, it’s not just Tesla vs mobile Eye. This off-the-shelf race is now getting Nvidia into the game as well - with Nvidia partnering with Li Auto - a Chinese EV company - and Qualcom has their own autonomous driving division called the Qualcomm Snapdragon Ride Platform with off the shelf parts. Folks, the hedge to Tesla might not be other car manufacturers. It might be Nvidia, Intel, and Qualcomm. Now out of these 3 intel has become the least favorite as a chip maker, BUT Nvidia, Intel’s Mobile Eye, Qualcomm, and TEsla are all in an autonomous race against each other. And this has been a bit of a blind spot for me - a lot of us are very excited about robo taxies, but if mobile eye Nvidia or Qualcomm Beat Tesla to the punch, it cal for a volatile moment for Tesla. As such, it might make sense to include a mix of Nvidia, intell and Qualcomm as an autonomy hedge on Tesla. Something to think about.
