J. Cole & His Landlord Mohammad ❤️

Between 2006 and 2009, after graduating from St. John’s University, J. Cole (Jermaine Cole) lived in a townhouse in Queens, New York. He was grinding hard as an independent artist — making beats, recording mixtapes, and chasing his dream while sharing the place with friends. The monthly rent was $1,700.
His landlord, Mohammad (sometimes spelled Mohammed), quickly noticed Cole’s work ethic and talent. When times got tough and Cole couldn’t always pay on time, Mohammad didn’t evict him or add pressure. Instead, he showed patience, let him delay payments (sometimes for months), and treated him like family, not just a tenant. Mohammad even listened to Cole’s beats and encouraged him to keep going, believing he would make it big one day. 
Cole has referenced this period in his music. In the 2013 hit “Power Trip” (feat. Miguel), he raps:

“Okay, back when I was sleeping in my mama crib
Or even back when I was up there in Mohammed crib
Paying seventeen hundred for the rent, money well spent
No heater, but a ni*ga made heat, may I vent?”

After signing his record deal with Roc Nation (Jay-Z’s label) in 2009 — becoming the first artist on the roster — Cole’s career took off. One of the first things he did was return to Mohammad, repay every cent he owed, plus interest, as a sign of deep gratitude. 
Cole has continued visiting Mohammad and his family over the years. A notable visit happened around 2016, where he returned to the same house (there’s footage of this shared by Mohammad’s family). He still stays in touch and visits regularly, never forgetting the support he received during his hardest times. Mohammad has described Cole as “like a family member.” 
This remains one of the most wholesome and inspiring stories in hip-hop — a perfect example of loyalty, gratitude, and believing in someone before the world does.
