Beneath A Steel Sky (Amiga CD32) - A Playguide and Review - by LemonAmiga.com

Beneath a Steel Sky is a dystopian point and click adventure from Revolution Software, which came out in 1994. It came as both a normal disk 15 disk version, and as a special CD32 edition, with full voice speech from the PC version. I never play the CD before, so lets try it out.

The story for this one is quite long. This is one of those games I had in the big box back in the day. In fact just like Sensible Soccer, I got version 1 of the software; which turned out to be slightly buggy. For example, the game would crash if you tried to use the lightbulb in the underground section. I found the broken disk (disk 11) and sent it back to rebellion, hoping they would fix it. Instead they sent me 15 brand new disks, containing V1.1 of the game. They had fixed the lightbulb bug, but now the wind noise in the cathedral was broken. No matter.

On 3rd of May 2014, I went to my first retro show, Play Blackpool. The playguides had become quite well liked, and in those days was probably the height of my popularity on youtube. But I was surprised when I found the Amiga Kit stall, and they seemed to regognise my voice. I dont suppose there are too many Amiga game reviewers out there, even today. There was a guy behind the desk who couldnt beleieve I was there, so I made like I was reviewing their stall and made light of it. They had Car-Vup loaded on their X1000 machine, a game I still havent covered, as Im not very good at it. I asked if there was a game they wanted me to cover on the show, and they said Beneath a Steel Sky. I made a mental note of it, and bought a Boing Ball sticker for my PC case.

11th of October 2014, I went to my second show - this time is was Play Manchester. There I attended the Charles Cecil talk, which is on my channel here somewhere. After the show, I was chatting to him, and thats when he offered me a job working for them. He said he had never offerered anyone a job on the spot before, but I was so enthusiastic he felt compelled to offer. I am quite a timid person, and the thought of me packing up sticks and moving to Scarborough didnt sound appealing. Plus I knew I wasnt the biggest point and click adventure buff, and had to look up the solutions to most of them. So I declined, but asked about a full voice speech version of Beneath a Steel Sky, he reminded me that, - of course - they had released a version on CD for the CD32! I vowed I would review the CD32 version. At the same show, Charles was talking about getting back with Dave Gibbons some day, and making a sequel. Ironically he ended up doing that before I got around to this review.

I recorded the footage in Feb 2018, along with most of the rest of these series 5 part 2 videos, that Spring. Minskies Furballs followed, then Fate of Atlantis and PowerMonger. I was using my then standard screen capture method of autoscalled 800 x 600 display and 50fps. Thats why the sharpness of the footage is rather muddy.

April 15th 2020 - At this point, series 5 part 2 had been on hold for a couple of years. I got a PM out of the blue from Amiga Kit, offering to send me another sticker for the one I lost in 2014. This reminded me about the review, and I felt guilty that the shows had been put on ice. That Summer, I was given a break from the job I had been assigned to do, which meant I had a few months until Christmas to squeeze in these playguides. There was just enough time to edited the shows down, and finally release them to the public. In a way, this vid started with Amiga Kit, and they prompted me to make this video and this series. Thanks to them for this fresh feeling of being able to serve the community. I put a clip of me initially meeting them at their Amiga Kit stall (3rd May 2014) at the end of this video.

Due to a sound initialisation bug within WinUAE, the voice clips in this recording started and ended with a clicking sound. This was still an issue with the latest WinUAE. So I had to filter the game audio to remove all those clicks.

Danscore:
Beneath a Steel Sky takes the essential elements of a stylistic graphic novel, and turns them into a highly atmospheric adventure. The fact there are no commands to type or buttons to press can be a welcome thing. Leading on from their innovative Virtual Theatre created for Lure of the Temptress, this second version of that engine appears as though pure genius, and makes me wonder why we needed icons in the first place. The story is good, sometimes funny, and never too complex to understand. The game is a national treasure, and worth 9 out of 10. I just wish it was longer.
