The January transfer window is now open for business, meaning Chelsea may be looking to cut their cloth ahead of drafting in new recruits to bolster their title prospects.
The January transfer window is officially open for business, meaning clubs in England have now been set free of the leash in an attempt to bolster their options ahead of the second half of the season.

During the summer, Chelsea were the Premier League's headline spenders, spending more than a combined total of £220million to draft in seven new faces, which included the big-money arrivals of Hakim Ziyech, Kai Havertz and Timo Werner.

However, Chelsea's form in recent weeks has raised questions about whether or not Frank Lampard, the Blues head coach, will need to dive deep into the transfer kitty once again this month, with the Blues having lost four of their last six games, winning just once.

It has been well documented that Chelsea remains keen on signing West Ham United and England midfield enforcer Declan Rice, but the likelihood of that deal being completed this month is slim, with the Hammers poised to dig their heels in and fend off any interest or offers that come their way.

Although Chelsea is being linked with adding to the squad this month, with Borussia Dortmund star Erling Haaland's name also doing the rounds, departures are far, far more likely than arrivals at Stamford Bridge.

In recent weeks, it has emerged that centre-back Fikayo Tomori, who has struggled for game-time this season, is likely to depart on loan, with Thiago Silva, Kurt Zouma, Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger ahead of him in the pecking order. Another name that could leave Stamford Bridge this month is Danny Drinkwater, who has not played a single minute for the Blues this season.

But ahead of those two potentially leaving west London in the coming days and weeks, Brazilian winger Lucas Piazon, who has been on Chelsea's books since 2011, looks set to leave the club on a permanent basis.

The 26-year-old has recently returned from a loan spell at Portuguese club Rio Ave. However, after 10 years at the club, Piazon, who has been sent out on loan to seven different clubs during that time, is now poised to leave on a permanent basis.

According to Goal, three clubs, who have not been named, are in talks with the Blues about signing the former Reading and Fulham loanee.

Piazon has now entered the final six months of his contract at Stamford Bridge, but with him having the option of an extra year means that Chelsea can cash-in on him and receive a transfer fee, opposed to losing him for free.

Chelsea's decision to terminate Piazon's loan at Rio Ave will have been a blow to the Portuguese outfit, with him having made 12 appearances for them this season.

However, Piazon's looming permanent exit from Stamford Bridge can only be a good thing for him, with a fresh start elsewhere handing him the chance to settle and make somewhere home after being sent out on loan season after season.

In total, Piazon made just three appearances for Chelsea in all competitions, with his only Premier League outing come in the memorable 8-0 win over Aston Villa back in December 2012.
