5 Most Mysterious Disease Origins on Earth
For years on end, the question of whether some mystery diseases may have extraterrestrial origins has loomed over humanity. In 2007, a chondritic meteorite fell near a village in Peru. Many locals started to gather around it and later reported feeling sick. Scientists believed the cause to be arsenic inhalation, but tests later showed no signs of the compound...
As a meteorite fell near Carancas in the remote highlands of Peru on September 15, 2007, the first people to arrive at the scene were the locals.
The residents who first inspected the mysterious crash site found a 20-foot-deep, 98-foot-wide crater containing boiling water and noxious gases spewing from the hole and emitting a strong sulfur odor.
Before the authorities arrived, several villagers took black fragments from the crash back to their homes to keep as mementos. Hours later, many of the villagers who came into contact with the crater, as well as first responding police officers, reported feeling sick.
This sudden and unexplainable illness had a wide array of symptoms, including nausea and head-splitting headaches. And as the illness continued to spread, the death of nearby livestock was also reported.
Despite Peruvian health officials initially downplaying the incident, international media coverage forced leading government executives to warn people to avoid any glowing object falling from the sky.
The sudden appearance of an extraterrestrial figure in the remote land ignited superstitious fears from the locals, leading the Mayor to ask a respected elder shaman to perform a ritual sacrifice hoping to convince the residents that the meteorite did not pose any danger.
Speculation about the illness suggested that the townspeople had inhaled vaporized arsenic, a toxic chemical commonly found on the groundwater. However, tests found no unusual levels of the compound, and the Carancas Meteorite sickness remains a mystery.
Later on, scientists determined that the meteorite, one of the largest to land on Earth in recent memory, made its way earthside from an asteroid belt 110 million miles away, floating between Mars and Jupiter.
