Fixing Nissan Leaf clicking noise / Nissan Leaf clunk noise

In this video I take you through my (successful) attempt to fix the Nissan Leaf clicking noise. Hearing a clicking or clunk noise from the front axle on acceleration or deceleration is a common problem across a lot of Nissan models. I guess it is more noticeable in the Leaf because the rest of the car is so quiet.

It is caused by a lack of lubrication on the stub axle and the hub nut working loose. The hub nut is held in place by a split pin and castellated locking ring / washer but even these will allow quite a lot of movement of the nut before stopping it.

The video starts with the brake pads, disc and caliper removed because I did this work at the same time as changing the front brake discs and pads.

To clean and lubricate the stub axle properly, the outboard end of the driveshaft needs to be removed from the hub carrier. I did this by disconnecting the hub carrier from the steering arm and lower ball joint. Separating the hub carrier from the lower ball joint was a challenge as it was well rusted in place. When I do this job again I'm going to try just disconnecting the hub carrier from the shock absorber as I think that might offer enough room to get the driveshaft out and would be a lot quicker. So it's your choice whether you give that a go or follow along with my method.

Some of the steps shown here will also be useful if you need to replace your Nissan Leaf lower arm, Nissan Leaf track rod end or Nissan Leaf front wheel bearing.

With the driveshaft removed from the hub I cleaned it up and applied a good quality lubricant with a high molybdenum disulfide content.

Having put everything back together I was really pleased to hear that the clicking noise had gone away. I waited for a few weeks and over 600 miles before calling it a fix because I've seen some forum posts from people who've had this fix done to their car and the noise came back after a few weeks.
