The 2019 National Buck Dancing Championship was held at Maupinfest in September, and Hillary Klug won! The two other finalists are also proteges of Thomas Maupin. Courtney Derryberry and Jake Fennell.

"I've won the National Championship previously when it was held at Uncle Dave Macon Days. This year they moved it to Maupinfest, and I was so honored to be the first to win the National Championship at the new festival! I was not expecting to win. Both the other finalists were so amazing. It was such a privilege to be dancing against the best of the best:)

2019 was the first year for Maupinfest, and the festival in in honor of buck dancer Thomas Maupin. Thomas Maupin is so special to me because he taught me everything I know. He inspired and encouraged me. He's taught so many people his dance, and he's kept this old traction alive, and it's amazing to see his legacy through all the dancers at the festival. Thomas has won the National Championship 7 times, and he's received the Governor's Award, and the National Heritage Award. I'm so proud to be one of Thomas' proteges, and I'm so honored and privileged to carry on the tradition and share it with others."
