Penn State Altoona Pulse Detonation Engine

Pulse Detonation Engine that was designed, built, and tested at the Advanced Combustion & Energetics Laboratory at Penn State Altoona. The chamber is 38 inches long, 1.780 inch inner diameter. The fuel (ethylene) and oxidizer (oxygen) are injected up to 40 Hz, and air flows at a steady rate to both oxidize and purge. The pre-mixed reactants are ignited at a 2ms spark delay by a modified MSD ignition system. This PDE was a senior capstone project by Austin Murray, Eric Pittman, and Tyler Smith, undergraduate students in the Electro-Mechanical Engineering Technology program at Penn State Altoona. Please note: the frame rate of the camera used does not capture all combustion cycles visually.
