The 1859 Savannah Slave Auction: A Genealogy of People and Place by Dr. Kwesi DeGraft-Hanson

This lecture was part of a series of events titled: Unearthing the Weeping Time: Georgia's Hidden Landscapes of Slavery. This series of events told the stories of The Weeping Time, one of the largest sales of enslaved persons in U.S. history, which took place in Savannah on March 2-3, 1859. Over the course of two days, 429 men, women, and children were sold to satisfy the creditors of planter Pierce M. Butler. Using the physical spaces associated with the sale as the foundation for the discussion (including the Ten Broeck race course where the sale took place and the Butler plantations that had been home to those individuals and families sold at auction), this series chronicled the historical event and examined the legacy of the sale as experienced by generations of families impacted by it.
