Due to environmental damage caused by mass tourism, Maya Bay was closed for several years. Since 2022, it has been open to visitors again, but with strict rules:
Swimming prohibited: To protect the recovering coral reefs and shark population, visitors are prohibited from wading deeper than their knees.
Limited number of visitors: A limited number of people are allowed per day, and each visit usually lasts about 1 hour.
Seasonal closure: The beach is closed every year in August and September (during the monsoon season) to allow nature to rest.
Access: Boats can no longer dock on the beach itself; tourists are disembarked on the other side of the island (in Loh Sama Bay) and arrive via a wooden walkway.
