Victorian budget to be delivered on Tuesday

Victoria has raised the white flag on contributing to the landmark AUKUS agreement, according to the state’s Shadow Treasurer Brad Rowswell.

Mr Rowswell has flagged new Liberal policies to pay down soaring debt which he says shouldn’t lead to new taxes.

"The state of Victoria’s economy at the moment is a binfire, it is a basket case," Mr Rowswell told Sky News Australia.

Net debt in Victoria is soaring towards $200 billion, currently estimated at $177.8 billion by June 2027 – more than Queensland, Tasmania and New South Wales combined.

At the top of the Opposition’s wish list is a commitment to no new taxes, a plan to reduce debt and transparency about budget blowouts on projects such as the suburban rail loop.
