Why Norfolk clifftop homes are falling into the sea and who is to blame | ITV News

Thirteen homes on top of a cliff at Hemsby near Great Yarmouth in Norfolk are at risk of crashing into the sea after two 'Beast from the East' weather events speeded up coastal erosion in the area.

Local residents are calling for more government funding to provide better sea defences. The Environment Agency says the local authority Great Yarmouth Borough Council is responsible for coastal protection but the council says it can't afford it and is that it does not have a statutory duty to protect land it doesn't own.

The Environment Agency says this part of the Norfolk coast is subject to 'managed re-alignment' which it defines as 'allowing the shoreline to move naturally, but managing the process to direct it in certain areas."
