Pressure testing a gearcase. 70hp Johnson outboard. Driveshaft seals. Failed.

This method works on most gearcases with opposing seals (lip in/lip out). Using a modified Rad tester with a fill screw adapter, we apply soapy water to the seal and add pressure. If bubbles appear, it indicates a leak. This technique is effective for both 2-stroke and 4-stroke outboards and sterndrives, ensuring the gearcase holds oil in and keeps water out.

By regularly checking your gearcase, you can prevent potential damage and maintain optimal performance. This method is suitable for all brands, providing a reliable way to identify and address seal issues. Proper maintenance of your outboard and sterndrive engines is crucial for longevity and efficiency.
