Gaash Band

Music for conflict transformation
Sarhad launches Gaash (light), the first Indian musical band by the violence affected
youth from the conflict zone of Kashmir.

Not a day passes in the Kashmir valley, without the sound of grenades and gunfire.
Amplified for the world community by the media, the gunshots drown other sounds of
sanity from the Valley. The sound of music and poetry, a strong signature of
Kashmiriyat, is deliberately silenced. That doesn't mean it died in the hearts of its
people.

Unlike its political fault lines, cultural geography of Kashmir is vast, diverse and
composite in character. Therefore, when a few youth with traumatic past, from
Sarhad, Pune, decide to pick musical instruments in their hands, they do so with the
aim of harmonising conflicts in the valley. For offering an alternative to the gun—the
guitar.

In the face of adversity and toughest of circumstances, music can lift the human
spirit and bring people together with a constructive force. The timeless appeal of
“Give peace a chance,” the anti-war anthem by John Lennon, proved it globally.
Sarhad, a Pune based NGO, is moving in similar direction. It has been working for
the children of conflict zones from the border states. In 2004, it brought about 150
traumatised children from Kashmir, to help them lead a life of normalcy in
harmonious conditions. Few of these children, now, young men and women, have
formed Gaaash (light), a musical band, the first of its kind, to introduce the
harmonious side of Kashmir, as seen from their traumatised perspectives. The rich
social and cultural history of Kashmir, is introduced by the band with its diverse
traditions of music and poetry.

The vocabulary of these young musicians was, at one time, limited to grenades and
bullets. Shameema Akther of Bandipora, was discovered, all soaked in blood, by
strangers under the seat of a bus, when her mother was hit by a bullet in her arm
and her aunt lost her life, caught in crossfire between militants and the army.
Manzoor’s father took the bullets to save the life of his infant son, he was holding, at
the time of attack on his life. Joginder Sing lost 15 members including his
mother, father, grand father and a sister in a single militant attack in village Lehota
Nandna Tehsil Thathri, district Doda, when he was barely four years old. Aqib Bhat,
from Bandipora, Bashir Khan, an orphan from Kargil, Leh, and
Ruqaya Maqbool, Mukhtar Dar from Kashmir Valley, have their tales of violence and
blood— lived and witnessed. They no more allow these incidents to overshadow
their mind. Diffusing the violent echoes of the past to create fresh notes of music—
of hope and dreams— has been a long transformative process for Sarhad.

The music of Gaash reflects it; the new approach tends to focus on the psycho-

social effects of conflict. If the bullets and blasts have been loud, so can be the
microphones and amplifiers; that can carry the messages of peace and harmony to
places far and wide to transform conflict into a space for creativity. Radio and
television, and now online avenues like YouTube, are the new tools that expand their
audiences—and their influence. Gaash is committed to expand the influence and
power of music for a positive change, with their first show slated for March 2019, in
Srinagar, where the universal notes of music will switch languages, to expand the
cultural horizons.

Well-known composer Mohammad Mazhar Siddiqui, who is associated with Kashmiri
music for many years will coordinate and compose the music for young singers who
are committed to spread the songs of humanity, love and peace; incorporating
classics of Lal Ded and Habba Khatoon to the contemporary poets. Traditional
instruments like Rebab and Tumaknadi will be supported by modern drums, guitar
and keyboard.

The young musicians of Gaash want to take the rich cultural landscape of Kashmir to
a wider— national platform, with their message of love, peace and harmony.
