Tailings Pond Blights Mountain Meadow #environmental #mining #nationforest #camping

The tailings pond for the Henderson Mine blights a mountain meadow. The mine will eventually reclaim the area, but unlike the mountainous terrain, the pond will be an unusual flat spot on the mountain scenescape. With mountains all around it, the meadow will look unnatural. Until then, the pond is an un-natural lake perched above the valley floor. In the old days, the mines didn't have tailings ponds at all, and water would pass through the mine tailings and contaminate near-by rivers. The Henderson Mine at least is using environmental practices to prevent this damage.

The Mine dominates the landscape and the public is unable to use most of the land devoted to the mine including the storage reservoir. Other organizations have allowed the public to use their reservoirs for recreational purposes including the Denver Water Department which operates a reservoir nearby.
