Trigeminal neuralgia (TN), also called tic douloureux, is a progressive nerve condition that causes intermittent severe pain often described as stabbing, burning, or shock-like, and excruciating. Pain can be triggered by common activities including eating, shaving, or light touches of the face. TN affects approximately 150,000 Americans. For most patients, treatment of trigeminal neuralgia begins with medication. Because TN is a progressive condition, many patients find that medications that were initially effective eventually no longer provide relief. Others find that side effects of TN medications are not tolerable. For those patients, stereotactic radiosurgery with Gamma Knife is a preferred treatment option.
