ISSRDC 2022: Day 3 Morning
Climate Research Onboard the ISS
The ISS has a suite of external instruments that enable combined observations of Earth’s evolving ecosystems. These instruments include ECOSTRESS, OCO-3, GEDI, and HISUI. While each instrument was designed independently, the nature of the observations offers an unprecedented opportunity to resolve regional-and global-scale understanding of ecosystem process and function. Join us for a discussion with researchers who are using the ISS in novel ways to help address climate change on Earth.
Moderator
Karen St. Germain, Ph.D., Earth Science Division Director, NASA
Panelists
• Ralph O. Dubayah, Ph.D., Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation(GEDI)
• Abhishek Chatterjee, Ph.D., Principal Investigator, Orbital Carbom Observatory 3 (OCO3)
• Simon Hook, Ph.D. Principal Investigator, ECOsystem Spaceborne Thermal Radiometer Experiment on Space Station (ECOSTRESS)

Sustainability and Corporate Engagement With the ISS
Several corporations have sponsored sustainability-related research onboard the ISS, leveraging the unique space environment to address corporate responsibility goals and move the science forward. The focus is not on obtaining intellectual property for their own companies, but rather finding ways to advance the research to improve opportunities globally. Additionally, climate change is a topic of priority for all organizations involved in manufacturing. The question is: How will manufacturing technologies evolve to address sustainability concerns, and how can the ISS support this evolution? This fireside chat will discuss space-based sustainability-related research that has been funded by corporations, touching on why the companies choose to fund ISS research and their continued interest.
Moderator
Christine Kretz, VP Programs and Partnerships, ISS National Lab
Panelists
• Todd Cline, Senior Director, Head of Sustainability, Proctor & Gamble, North America Fabric Care
• Carl Haney, Executive Vice President, Estee Lauder
