Quadriplegic Beagle Regains Full Mobility After Using Dog Wheelchair
Wilson’s owner found him one morning, unable to move any of his limbs. Upon this discovery, Wilson was brought to Mass Vet Referral Hospital to be seen by a neurologist where he was diagnosed with Ataxia.
she took Wilson to Canine Strong, an animal rehab facility in Concord, NH, to be evaluated by specialists. The vets initially diagnosed Wilson with Ataxia; however, Wilson woke up the next day in even worse condition . . .
When Wilson and his family returned for a follow-up exam, it was discovered that Wilson had quadriparesis (paralysis of all 4 limbs), as well as a large mass on his chest. Wilson’s family faced a difficult decision; however, Wilson’s owner knew the fight wasn’t over yet. They wanted Wilson to live out the remainder of his days surrounded by the things and people he loved most.
They began Wilson on a rehab treatment plan, using full body harnesses to assist him into the standing position and practicing the “walking” motions. Wilson’s owner saw how excited he would get when they brought him to the beach, so the team at Canine Strong recommended incorporating a Walkin’ Wheels dog wheelchair into his treatment plan. This wheelchair would allow Wilson to enjoy those special moments with confidence, independence, and ease.
With the assistance of his chair, Wilson was able to stand and even began building up enough muscle to take a few assisted steps. However, after many rehab visits and practice in his new wheels, Wilson started showing major signs of improvement, and suddenly began to walk on his own WITHOUT the assistance of the wheelchair. This is rare to see in dogs with Wilson’s same diagnosis and considered nothing short of a miracle.
Renee, with Canine Strong, says,
“I think the wheelchair really gave Wilson the freedom he wanted back, because he would improve each time he got into the cart - and now he is RUNNING.
It not only improved his physical, but it improved his mental as well, and that really is what started his progression into moving and running around.
It is a night and day difference. I think the wheelchair is what saved his life.”
