AlphaZero and the Protected Passed Pawn
After only 13 moves, AlphaZero has given Stockfish an extra pawn, and it's a protected passed pawn at that! As a Master level player, this idea against the Queen's Indian Defense by AlphaZero was something I've never seen before. Every semi-experienced chess player understands the great value a protected passed pawn has in the game, particularly in the endgame. So the question is, in what ways is AlphaZero compensated for being down a pawn? What is Stockfish potentially overvaluing in the position? The key to these answers can be found by observing the pawn structure.
