The Gauge-Changing Train 🚆

Railways around the world were built to different track gauges, the distance between the two rails. For decades, a train crossing from one gauge to another had to stop while crews lifted the cars and swapped out the wheelsets, a slow and expensive process.

Variable gauge systems fix that. As the train rolls slowly through a track-side changer, locking mechanisms release each wheel, the wheels slide along the axle to the new spacing, and then re-lock, all without uncoupling or stopping. Spain's Talgo trains are among the best known examples.
