Problem: Main underground water line from street to home leaking at the rate of 2 gallons a minute. Causing the home owners water bill to increase $150 a month.

Approach: Listen to yard hydrants to see if any of those are leaking. Introduce tracer gas to see if it can be detected in more than one spot. Then listen with sensitive equipment for sounds of a leak that might be present as a back up method.

Result: Found three leaks. One where a copper line enters the back of the house. And two others coming out of yard spigots that weren't sealing correctly. The main problems was the first, underneath the deck.
